Problem:
You receive a Page Not Found or 500 Internal Server error when you click on a sub-sites Local Breadcrumb.
Cause:
This is a known bug with Microsoft SharePoint. There are some HotFixes posted for different situations but they do not work for everyone. None of the existing HotFixes work for me.
Resolution:
In most cases you can resolve this by re-inheriting the permission levels on the broken site after you have broken them. Now this fix only seemed to work for me after applying WSS 3.0 Service Pack 1.
From your broken sub-site, go to the '/_layouts/role.aspx' page, then select 'Edit Permission Levels'
Next, from the same page, click the 'Inherit Permission Levels' button.
Note: Any custom permissions on a library or list are completely gone. You will have to manually reset all permissions.
