Using Windows Live Writer – Love It!

I have installed WLW and documenting the installation and steps now for those of you who want to use it as your Blog Editor.

So far I really like this tool as it's rich text editor is better and if you want to insert a picture it will automatically load it into your Blog site's Graphics Library.  It also allows you to format the picture and text better.  You can enter Tags, and even Videos.  If you have an  Blog this is a must have.  You can install it from here http://get.live.com/writer/overview and choose SharePoint WebBlog - then enter the Absolute URL to your Blog.  Then when presented with options make sure and select to Update Styles...it will go to your Blog site and download your Theme styles so WLW reflects that Themes styles.  Every time you change your Theme make sure and select to Update Styles in WLW again.

Here are a few working tips to be aware of.

  1. If you copy content and pictures from somewhere else into your Windows Live Writer blog content...remember that it is copying the HTML Source, so the picture's original link will be copied with it.
    1. You will either need to edit the HTML Source Code directly afterwards (not preferred),
    2. or save the picture locally then in WLW select to INSERT a picture and select the local copy. This way it will automatically upload the graphic into your blog posting as an ATTACHMENT.
    3. Or my preferred method is to just upload the graphic into my local blog site Graphics Library and reference that local URL instead.  This way I can easily reference it in many different pages.
